Today, problems and issues – unprecedented in their complexity and scale like climate change and Covid-19 – confront societies requiring a resolution based upon a wider-than-economic appreciation of value and the engagement of citizens. Underscoring the globalised world-system we inhabit, these problems and issues shape policy and politics and foreground relationships with citizens and stakeholders.
Join Policy Network, the University of Central Lancashire and the Samuel Lindow Foundation at the launch of a new book – Public Value Management: Institutional Design and Decision for the Common Good – as we explore a public value approach to the design and delivery of public policy as a way of appreciating, assessing and articulating human needs and motivations, and in facilitating the actions and achievements of organisations and entrepreneurs across all sectors.
As a concept, public value provides an appreciation of value beyond immediate material interest. It allows policy makers and managers to encompass the entire gamut of human needs and motivations. It creates a new construct in policy and liberates them to imagine wider contributions and relationships with co-producers and collaborators beyond the relatively restrictive boundaries of often inappropriate missions.
Drawing upon insights from space, energy, tourism and higher education this book focuses upon public value in the context of human values, social justice and social value. It bridges the gap between the ‘soft subjectivity’ associated with human value outcomes and harder policy and practice outputs. Today, complex global issues require new relationships and actions and a public value perspective simplifies their complexity enabling communication with co-producers at the necessary level of the individual citizen, a common narrative allows us to confront ‘wicked’ problems at local, national and international levels.
